clams and nitrates

I am running a 30 gallon x-high mini-reef. I am in the process of upgrading from PC lighting to MH Lighing and will be able to keep croceas and maximas.

My tank has been a little neglected and my nitrates are up. Is it true that these clams are nitrate eating machines ? If my other water parameters are right, can I add them to the reef while the nitrates are still a bit high ?

they aren't necessarily nitrate eating machines, and may be ok, I'd really recommend getting the nitrates in check before putting them in there though, since more than anything they need stable conditions and good water quality
