Clams at night...

What is your experience with their behvior at night? UIs it abnormal for clams to retract into their shell at night and completely close? What is the rule of thumb for a healthy, "sleeping" clam.

mine rarely fully close

Mine dont actually close much either. The mantle retracts prehaps a third to half, but the shell stays about the same.

mine pulls his mantle in, but stays open about 3/8"

Exactly as others have stated. Mine retracts, but about 1/4 of the mantle is still extended.

they stay open so that they can filter the water for food etc. the retraction of the mantle well thats just for protection purposes/no use at night.
