clams in a nano

on the nano tank of the month thread there is a guy with a clam in his ten gallon then another guy with 6 in his 10 gallon.

You can have a clam if your lights will sustain one. What does your lighting system consist of? I have a crocea in my 24 gal AquaPod, but I have 150w MH fixture

Agree with the above post. Lighting is really the key. Size doesn't matter so much per say- although having really bright light on a super small tank can obviously be an issue. I keep my Crocea in a 20 gallon with the Coralife 150 watt MH plus 2 x 65 watt PC actinics setup and it has been doing great. I tried keeping a Crocea in the same tank with only 2 65 watt PC actinics and it wasted away within just a few weeks. A Derasa and Maxima clam on the other hand survived for years in the same setup with just the PC lights. So it also depends on the kind of clam you wish to keep.

as with anything else in a nano, the skill and diligence of the aquarist and quality of the setup is more important than rules of thumb...

with that said, I've had clams in my 20l for over a year under 150 total watts of VHO

i have two clams in a 10G, with 96 watts of PC 50/50 4 tube.

It has only been a few months for the crocea, but he is good and anchored in the substrate, and the derasa is new.

light and calcium. nuff said.

This guy is keeping several clams in 24g cube.
I have 2 tridacna babies in 10g, sunlight +PC, they grow fast and may overgrow the tank in several years, if they survive.

I've read (and am buying one tomorrow for my nano) that the only problems are having sufficient lighting and being able to keep your parameters stable. Having less water, nano's are more easily swayed in water quality and temperature, pH etc. If these are under control you should be good to go.

yeah you have to stay on top of your water in such a small tank, if you start to get lazy about checking it , you will have problems very quick, another thing is the auto topoff, it keeps the water at the same xact level all of the time, makes things alot easier

reefman where did you get those?!?! Holy moly! Beautiful! Never seen any so nice. =) I have a question about the clams, how often do you need to dose calcium? I have a 40 gallon breeder and would like to know the ballpark figure for dosing calcium. My calcium is really good right now. About 450. Just wondering how often you'd have to dose it. I was thinking about B-Ionic. I love clams. =) Also, how established should your tank be before you get them?

Clams are very doable, you just need the right lighting and water params. Make sure you get one that won out grow your tank to quickly.

I really want a clam as well in my pico. I just upgraded to a 36w current USA for 3gal. Im going to set up my ATO, for now ive just been filling it when I see its a little below my HOB filter (its my reference point)

I know my params arnt quiet there yet, but do u think it would be alright in 3gal w/ 36w? I was gonna get a smaller one...around 1.5-2"

Sorry I missed this... thanks alot!

The one on the left I got from Seaside in Huntington Beach before they removed their nice shallow clam tank. The one on the right I adopted from a friend who had a bicolor that was picking at it.

Here is a picture from the front...
