i have a 180 gal with 3 150 watt mh's and was wondering what clams i could keep under such low lighting. its 2 ft deep. can i make up for some of the light with phyto?

you cant make up for lack of lighting with foods(phyto). clams can only filter so much and a lot of what they actually filter isn't even eaten but rejected.

clams can be kept under 150MH but you have to pick the right species and place them at the right depth. what K rating is your lighting and what species are you wanting to keep?

10k's and which ever are colorful it doesnt matter what species but from what i read the squamies and deresas are my best bet but i am a little partial to the croceas. would be concerned about putting a large clam in my rock work as it is not leaning against the back wall

10k is perfect for clams. IMO you can do a Crocea but you will have to place it at least half way up in the rock work.

but how would i secure it in the rock work? what strategies to people use to put these huge clams near the top? do they sway or move alot once they are in place? can it just attach to a big piece of rock and then i just put that piece near the top

Croceas are not huge clams, they are the smallest of the clams. what most people do is at first they place the clam on the sand with a small rock buried under the sand and allow the clam to attach to the rock first(takes a week or two) then they slowly move it up to where they want.

how deep should the rock be in the sand so that it can attach? how will i know when it has attached itself. thanx for the info

bury the rock just under the surface of the sand and place the clam on it. ( you can use a little sand or a few small rocks to prop him up at first ). just leave him alone for a week or so then gently with one finger try to move him. don't try to move him across the tank but just gently try to move him a 1/4". if he's attached he will barely budge, if not he will move quite easily and you need to wait a little longer.

If I plan on keeping a maxima within five inches from the surface with a 150 watt pendant will it survive?

i have 4 maximas on the bottom of my tank under 150 mh and they all do fine.

it would depend on the size of the tank. my tank is 2 ft deep so 150 watt lights would not do for maximas. im pushing it with croceas so if you have a small tank then yes if not then it gets fuzzier

Hey Checkinhawk,

What's the clam second from the left? I just got one and can't remember the name. I placed mine on the sand (24" deep, 150 mh) and it didn't seem to like it. I moved it up to a flat rock about 6" from the surface and it looks really happy. It moved 90 degrees and adhered itself to the rock.

the two outside clams are Croceas and the two in the center are Maximas

about 3 months now.i thought they were all maximas(they were sold to me as that)but now i think the outers are croceas.
