Clams with T5's?

Hello,

I saw in a few postings about people with T5's and having clams, is this possible? I thought clams require at least PC's or metal halides. If this is possible, then I might try having clams also, I have 4 T5's and the sand bed is about 18 inches deep from the lights. What do you think? Thanks for you opinions

T5s with M reflectors are brighter than PCs. And yes, you can keep clams under T5s. Some clams are more light demanding than others (crocea needs more than squamosa for example).

I have a squamosa about 15inches below on the sand bed with t-5 HO, couldn't have asked for better growth

Yes. They rock. I originally had PCs, they did not rock.

Are the HO T5's the ones with the M reflectors? In that case, I don't have the HO. But could I modify my lights so they would be? Or if I have the regulars, could I modify it to be HO's?

Light is good for Clams, they are photosythetic, but also remember they are filter feeders and require calcium for growth, lighting alone won't do it even with the brightest of bright lights.

Who makes your bulbs??? That would help to determine if they are HO (t5 ho are new to the US for aquarium use). You would also need individual reflectors (parabolic reflectors) that clip on the bulbs. I have 2 crocrea and a max in my T5 setup (4x 54wt on 55). I agree w/ sfsuphysics ---light is just the tip of the iceberg.

I have kept all specie of Tridacna,except Gigas under t5HO. The length and wattage of your lamps are needed to tell if they are HO.

wattage determines if they are HO but most lamps do not mention their wattage on the bulb.
