clams

I'm keeping one now. Have been for over a year, I guess. She's gorgeous. My favorite creature in the tank.

Rob at SWA told me yesterday that the Vietnamese trade has been re-opened. He's got some clams in stock although I am not sure what variety.

I love my clam for it's colors. Unfortunately, the only photo I have on hand is B&W. But it should give you some idea:

I picked up a Gold one from Rob on Friday. He had several in stock but the colors we not the best. Most were brown and speckled with some green or blue, but not solid. His stock is improving and was better than in the past. He has some nice pieces.

Rob got 30 some odd Crocea and has been having a huge sale this weekend.

True indeed!
The clams are $39 for one and $69 for two.

How do they do with nitrates? I've read contradictory info. Some say they are very sensitive to NO3 and that it must be kept very low. In other cases, people say they reduce nitrates. Some people had purchased a bunch of them specifically for that purpose.

Hmmm. I can't answer that with precision.

I only monitor my nitrates indirectly by monitoring nuisance algae growth, which is very limited in my tank. I keep my feeding to a humane minimum and I run chemipure elite. I also run a skimmer and filter floss and I keep a bunch of LPS and softies. So generally speaking, I would *guess* that my nitrates are pretty low.

When my aquapod sprang a leak, I was obliged to transfer all my livestock to my frag tank. At the time, the frag tank was still only a couple of months old and I was forced to shuffle a lot of rock in and out. I would guess that my nitrates rose during that process, but I never saw the bloom or mini cycle that I anticipated. The clam showed no signs of distress through any of that.

Sorry this is all so unscientific.

^Not on the tanks in which I've kept the clam.

I have a fuge on my zoanthid tank but I can't keep chaeto alive. Once again, I suspect this is because I keep nutrients low and because my coraline has been thriving.

How is your salinity? I've read that 1.024 is about right for clams, however my mushrooms look a lot better now that my sg is 1.026-ish. I used to keep it about 1.024 but things seem to like it better now.

For the first couple of years, I bought my saltwater at 1.023. I was low on calcium too. But the clam seemed to do just fine. In recent months, I've been brewing my own saltwater, using Seachem Reef, which is high on calcium. I try keep my salinity around 1.025, but it creeps up just a bit. The clam doesn't seem to mind the salinity at all. (And my coraline has exploded.) I'm still finding new growth rings(?) on the clam. You're welcome to come check it out if we can find a mutual time. Swan/Speedway.
