clams

I buy all at LFS now. we did do a group buy from Clamsdirect but honestly I can get them cheaper locally, even with the free shipping. And seeing it first is really great. Theres really one store in town that has the most clams. Denver also has a few.

Exotic Tropicals generally has small Deresa and Small croceas.

Neptunes Realm has larger croceas and right now Todd has a very large squamosa...it's pretty sweet.

SeaScape generally no clams, although they get one here and there.

Mr Aqua, sometimes they have clams..sometimes they don't

I don't make it ro FB much because of the distance from my house but I hear they have clams sometimes too.

The key Ryan is to determine what type of clam you want then shop based on that. All Tridancna's have different requirements for illumination and tank size.

The problem I've seen with the LFS's when I see clams is that they are almost always the same. Online you can get a better selection of colors, although online you can also get pyramid snails that won't go away.

Stupid snails, stupid red bugs, stupid flatworms..............aaargh

Joe, half your ills could be cured with a yellow coris wrasse, an H. Melanurus or a sixline. They won't take care of the redbugs, tbut they will decimate the pyrams and the flatworms, especially the melanurus..

What I've found is they all take pictures from the top of the clam, it looks different from the side. Also they get the clam fresh out of the ocean or from a collector and the colors are amazing, thats the clams response to very strong lighting, its blocking certain parts of the spectrum. When it sits in your tank or a LFS tank for a little while with normal MH lighting or strong flourescent it will lose some of that color. Thats just the way it is, unless you have some kind of exceptional setup I think the clam will change over time anyway and you wont have such an incredible clam as what you saw in the picture online.

Thats my 2¢ anyway

I agree with Murph, I love the colors from Clams Direct and we've done a couple group buys from them also but bottom line, every one of the clams I got from Barry ended up with Pinched Mantle and died. There was one exception and that was FW Dipped repeatedly and put in a new steril tank, finally beating the PM. Not bashing Barry at all as he's a great guy, knows his stuff and has an incredible selection, there is just something with those clams that don't like my tanks. On the other hand every one that I've gotten from the LFS including my current 6 are flawless! Maybe not the intense color, but I'll pass on intense color for survival. ;)

yeah there were alot of problems with the last group order especially. Also with the group order(doesnt really have much to do with clams) acouple of people didnt pay up because they werent happy with the product so the organizer of the deal ended up taking the blame even though everyone wsa supposed to pay with their own paypal accounts(i think the guy who wasnt happy canceled his payment through paypal or something)

That is so weak! I can't believe someone would do that to the organizer!!! :mad2: Just hearing this is getting me p!ssed. What is wrong with people?

I have to say I didnt lose either clam I got from barry, I must have got lucky. Croceas are the hardest clam out there though IMO they require expert care to survive, I could never keep a crocea alive in my 180 under 1000 watts of PC's, But in the 600 with MH's I havent lost one yet (knocking on the wood)

well im tryin to get the new book, giant clams in sea and aquarium but no one has it, amazon says it wont be in till march. ill try marinedepot i guess

I bought it in september right when it came out. Great book and worth finding! I'm not sure who has it but I thought I heard barry at clams direct is a distributer, might check there.

My crocea from the raffle (clams direct) is doing great, as are the other five. Christof is right with the colors. They will change under our lighting and if you look at them from the top down, they are totally different in color.
