Not legally, but every once in a while some come in and are for sale. I'm not sure if they come in with permits or not but the last group that came into FL were confiscated and all of the stores that bought them before they were taken from the wholesaler got a visit from F&W and if they had any they were also confiscated.
This is not true at all. There have been 3, 100% legal shipments of Clarions, into the US, since 2007. I've seen the paperwork, its good. California F&W inspected each of these shipments and passed them on to the importer to be sold at the wholesale level.
I'm sorry if I wasn't clear, clarions are not an illegal species, but most of the ones imported are imported illegally, like I mentioned sometimes they come in and occasionally it must be with paperwork I mentioned that I was not sure. Still 3 shipments in over 4 years of legal ones is only a part of what comes in, I have seen fish come into FL at least 4 times in 2008/09 and the last shipment was confiscated by F&W, they came in under the name Holocanthus sp. passer and got through customs. When they were discovered F&W also seized the records of the sales and went to all of the retail stores that bought them, they even took the dead one that was in the freezer at one of the retail stores in Hollywood FL (I can't remember the name but it is no longer there). Retail price on the ones that were sold was around $3000.

I think most of the clarions we see after 2007 were all legally collected by Cortez Marine (CM). In my country Clarions have been imported from CM three times over the past four years and they retail also about $3000 each. Japan, HK and Thailand got more clarions than us. If i'm not wrong each collection by CM has about 200 to 300 clarions at least. So with three collections being done the market now has almost a thousand clarions! There are many youtube videos of clarions and one of which shows many clarions in the holding facilities of CM.
I know of one for sale at the moment for $1,500 OBO... Came from a recent 600G tank teardown here in Fargo, ND. It is the ONLY clarion I have ever personally seen, but not too much of the high-end stuff makes it up this far.
my mistake, you are right. the little blue nodule clearly shows its a queen i guess.
let me try this again..
