Classic 2002 vibrating noise

Hi Roger,

Wow, with the popularity of the Streams Tunze is becoming a household name on the boards! How do you get away from all our questions!?!

Today's question: I have 2, 1 year old 2002's and a 3 month old 4002 mounted on euro bracing glass. No matter how I try, I cannot stop the 2002's from vibrating and resonating noise through the floor and into my bedroom behind the tank. Strangely, the 4002, also mounted with Tunze universal clamps, makes no vibrating noise at all when at 100%. Do you think this is an age/bearing thing or am I simply missing something with the way I have the 2002s mounted?

BTW, Picked up a Stream 6000 for my 100G stock tank after getting rid of my 6100 for the 120G. I must say, for my purposes this flow is much better for the size of tank!

It could be bearings. Does the pump ever stop do to overheating? Feel free to send it in for repair. In general the noise is due to saltwater entering the pump housing, this usually damages the bearings. The water line should be no more than 1" over the grooves at the bottom of the shaft tube or about 1.75" over the impeller housing itself. Being submerged deeper can allow saltwater to enter.

Thanks Roger, to my knowledge the pump(s) have never stopped due to overheating. One did stop in the past when run at 30% and the fan was not spinning smoothly. found snails in impellor.

I think your bearing comment is probably spot on. For the first year my overflow ran too high and the universal clamps were submerged by a quarter inch and the salt creep ran all the way up. I bought the 2004 and moved during the same month and corrected the overflow problem. Now the water level is in line with your recommendations. But the damage has probably been done on the 2002s.

I already want to add another 2004 to the tank so I'll order one today. When that arrives I'll send the 2002s to you for service. Thanks so much for your help. I had your address but don't anymore.

Thanks,

Kelly

It may be much simpler- if you found snails in the impeller they may have damaged the impeller and now it is out of balance.

Thanks, you may not recall but I damaged the impellor too when I took apart one pump for the first time. I broke both the (don't remember the names) white washer and the plastic needle shaped shaft. Both are functioning still with superglue fixes. :)

I ordered the replacement part kit from you which I have now. I just haven't taken the pump apart to put the new pieces in. Perhaps I should return the kit with the pumps too for professional install?!?
