Clean unsloppy eaters. Give me your thoughts.

Currently my 40 Breeder is 8 months old. Its a complete reef Clam/Sps/Lps/Softies/etc. I want to go with a low stock. I enjoy inverts, and corals. And want to keep maintenance down. I would love some ideas for getting some movement in my tank with a splash of color.

Fish at the moment:

1.25" Blue tang(have had him for 4 months he's grown maybe a quarter inch will be getting rid of him when he reaches about 2-2.5")

My thoughts are to try and get some movement and color with as little as feeding/pooping. So I want to go with clean eaters that don't waste food.

Also fish that could help clean algae/etc would also be great! :-)

So the fish that come to mind that are ruled off the list are Triggers/puffers/clown-fish

Obviously triggers/puffers are out of the question anyway.

Well, sounds like you are going to want fish that supplement food from eating off the rocks in the tank, so I would think planktivores like anthias and flasher wrasses would also be out. Not sure why you ruled out clownfish. Percs would be a nice, small addition. A pink streak warsse would work, but they are sort of secretive. A fridmani pseudochrmis would add color. Maybe get rid of your tang and replace it with a pair of yellowtail or azure damsels as your centerpiece fish?

 I think this is a great idea. Small, pretty, colorful, and reef-safe--and it's always good to see damsels being properly treated like other reef fish, instead of abused and discarded as "startup" fish to cycle a tank.

damsels are great. small, eat what you give them. If you do a little research, they are not the terrors they are claimed to be. I have a zebra damsel and he is timid. Had a domino damsel in there with him before and no issues. alot of people will say damsels are bad, but clownfish are a type of damsel and often more aggressive.

I definitely will think about getting rid of the blue tang. Reguardless he'll be gone in the next 4-8 months.

Also I really want peaceful reef safe fish. I've had terrible experiences with Damsels, and want to stay clear from them.

I'd think about one of the smaller halichoeres wrasses. Something like a chrysus. Its nice an active, will help rid tanks of pests and being a micropredator it will happily hunt for pods and small critters all day, partially feeding itself.
