Cleaning barrels

Anyone have any good suggestion for cleaning barrels for use as water storage.

I picked up a few 55-65 gallon used olive barrels when I picked up the 210.
I have done the following and they still smell of olives.

1. Cleaned with Dawn Dishwashing detergent, rinsed thoroughly, filled with 1-1.5 gallons of bleach per barrel and filled with water and let sit covered for 24-48 hours
Rinse and let stand for 3-24 hours

2. Repeated step one.

3. Cleaned with Dawn, then filled with 1 gallon of Concentrated Bacterial digester (Betco Push) per barrel.

4. repeated step one.

They still have a distinct olive aroma.

Any suggestions would be appreciated

Thank you

Steve

maybe try a chlorine shock. for pools. but you will need to rinse a few times as well as probibly put some type of chlorine out or water conditioner as you rinse it. now this is just a thought so if someone see's somthing wonrg with it please chime in.

is it really neccasary to get rid of the smell? i mean yeah theres probably something left in the barrells causing it but is it anything to be concerned about?

i would say yes. there is no telling what was in or on the olives that were in the barrel there for no telling what is still lining the barrel since the smell is still in there.

maybe its just me but I'd use it. It's undoubtedly clean after all that, and only contained food. Can't be worse than the garlic or vinegar I throw in every week

try going to the brew shop on upper front street and pick up some brewing cleaner. it works off of oxygen (think non-toxic oxyclean).

Fill buckets, dump in cleanser.. wait a while.. rinse and repeat if neccesary.

its worked for me on similar things
