Cleaning filter socks with Hydrogen Peroxide

Hi, So I know some people clean filter socks by putting them in 1/4cup of HP and then throw them in the washer for a couple of cycles with hot water.

So my question is do you put the 1/4 cup in a some water and then place the filter socks in the water? I guess I don't see how a 1/4cup can "soak" a whole filter sock.

I plan on doing this to about 5 filter socks so I has hoping to soak all of them together.

thanks!

I think a lot of people just pour the hydrogen peroxide onto the sock, but I too never really understood this. It seems that using hydrogen peroxide would end up costing a lot more than a cup of bleach and the socks in the washer. Hydrogen peroxide is expensive to begin with compared to bleach, and it seems you would have to use a lot more of it. I rinse mine with the garden hose and use bleach at the laundromat. No way my wife lets me use her machines with poo filled socks.

Anyone just dump a cup of hydrogen peroxide in the wash with socks or add a cup to a bucket of water and soak then wash?

I'll soak them in peroxide occassionally before putting them in the washing machine. I usually pour a couple small bottles of the 3% stuff you get at the store in a bucket with all my filter socks and let it soak for a while. (Not swimming in peroxide, but just enough so all the filter socks absorb a decent amount.) Just out of curiosity, where does the 1/4 cup come from?

i have a bucket in the garage that i pour a cup of bleach in, i have a 3 sock sump. ill soak them for a day rinse then and wait for 9 to be dirty then just add them to my washer machine with a cap full of bleach. after they come out i rinse let air dry and good to use. reason i soak them first is so there not as filthy going into the washer machine. probbaly skip that part, but makes my wife happy

I actually use oxyclean to clean mine after I high pressure hot water rinse. If I'm not in a rush I'll then toss them into my washing machine with clothes. Otherwise I just flush them with hot water and then out them back in service.

Someone here did some scientific research on cleaning filter socks. Bleaching socks only bleaches the dirt white. Hydrogen Peroxide actually did a better job of cleaning. I get mine damp and use a spray bottle of HP to cover the sock inside and out. After an hour I put them in the wash and use just water. They look pretty clean after that.

spray bottle as well, just put the socks in a stainless kitchen bowl and give them a spray inside and out...let sit for a few hours, then rinse in hot tap water.

HP is maybe like a buck a bottle and I maybe use a bottle ever two months.

Spraying with HP makes more sense to me than soaking due to cost. Also someone mentioned oxyclean. Sodium percarbonate, the chemical term for dry/solid HP, is what's in oxyclean.

I've only started and added some livestock last week, so haven't had to clean much from the filter socks. but expecting to.

I'm on a well at home and don't use our well water for anything with the tank, just don't have enough to run a RO/DI system. So I buy my water in the 5G jugs. I've been using purchased water to wash everything from my test kits to filter socks (clearly not in the washing machine).

should I be concerned with washing things using our well water, using our washing machine to wash filter socks? it sure would make things easier and save a bit of money? I know we have hard water but that should be it given we have it tested yearly to make sure its ok for consumption.

Thank you all for your input. I decided to spray the inside and outside of filter with hydrogen peroxide. Pretty cheap as you can get a 32oz bottle at Target for like 97cents.

Anyway I'll let them sit that way for a few hours and rinse with hot water and then I'm thinking of tossing them in the washer with hot water and extra rinse cycle.

If it's good enough to drink, I wouldn't worry about it too much for cleaning filter socks. I would just wash them in the machine and call it a day. I do rinse mine though before they go in the machine since they are so nasty. I always clean my test vials with RODI. Not sure about that.
