Cleaning filter socks

I have washed my filter socks twice in plain water. However, how do I know for sure no residual soap that might be left from previous loads of clothes, hasn't come into contact with the sock. Or is this less of a worry than I feel like it is. I'd appreciate hearing from others. Thank you.

You'll be fine. I add bleach to mine during the wash cycle and I set the washer to do a second rinse. I've been doing it for years without issue.

+1 bleach cycle / extra rinse and let air dry. Some people soak them in some de chlorination for a day then air dry. All preference

I wash mine with no soap or bleech using the sanitary mode on our washer. I have never seen any adverse effects from doing this.

I just use either baking soda or vinegar when I wash mine. Zero problems. I just switched to 100micron nylon mesh filter socks instead of the flt ones, and they are so easy to rinse in the sink, I probably don't need to run them in the clothes washer anymore.

I toss mine into the sanitary cycle on my front load washer, air dry, and haven't had issues. I've done this for 4 years.

Ditch the socks in favor of cheap poly fill ( pillow stuffing)It's readily available & very cheap at big box stores.Just stuff a handful in the sock compartment. When it needs to be changed, just pull out and throw away! I do tank maintenance for a living and have switched most of my sock using clients to this method. NO WASHING SOCKS!!!

Best way to solve the problem of dirty filter socks:

Through them out. They aren't necessary. Ditched mine a long time ago. But, what about all the gunk they collect. It will settle out and become a home in your sump for more kinds of animal life.

Inside out in the washing machine with a splash of bleach then right side out on an extra rinse cycle with no bleach.

I agree with Gary, I only use them when I clean the tank and direct the powerheads to the bear bottom for a few hours.
