cleaning my clam...

My clam had a bunch of Antepasia (spelling) growing on it. I used joes and got rid of most of it. There is a lot of gunk/residue (a sponge is kind of forming) left on the shell and it also has some xenia. I am going to do a water change and wanted to put it in the outflow water and scrub it with a toothburush. Questions: Can a clam touch air? Also is this a bad idea in general? I would really like to clean the shell up, it's a mess...

Thanx

I wouldn't do it until all the aiptasia are gone. It could possibly spread it. As far as the air, I would limit exposure. If you can scrub it underwater I would. Usually sponges and xenia can make it more interesting.
