Cleaning outside of tank

What is everyone using to clean the outside of a glass tank? I know you are not supposed to use glass cleaner due to the ammonia content. I have just been using water but I get terrible streaks and it just makes it worse. I know there must be a better way that I am missing.

They make a cleaner specifically for aquariums. But I use windex, just don't spray it near the top of the tank.

I've used Windex and other glass cleaners on my outside glass for well over 25 years without any problems. The trick is to have 2 soft lint-free towels, dampen one with the glass cleaner well away from the tank (another room preferably) and use it to clean the glass, use the second (dry) towel to dry/buff the glass.

If you're still too nervous about that, use a 50/50 RODI/Vinegar mixture... though I found it really doesn't cut greasy fingerprints off the glass like Windex without some extra elbow grease.

HTH

I (and many other people) just use windex. No need to worry as long as you dont get it in the tank. Its not gonna go through the glass or anything.

I really like the windex that has vinegar in it (not the standard blue one, but its clear). It's a "fast dry" one and it doesnt leave steaks that i always seem to get with the regular windex.

I wouldnt bother paying for those "aquarium safe" cleaners. They're like 15 bucks at my lfs....why not just pay 2 bucks for windex at walmart? :)

I use Coralife aquarium cleaner/polish. I used to use Windex but decided to try the Coralife product. The product cleans but also polishes. The glass feels real slick afterwards-like when you wax your car. It gives a lasting type of protection that allows you to just wipe stuff off between cleanings but makes it look freshly cleaned. I have kids who constantly touch the glass and get prints all over it. I also seem to get water drips on the front glass when I am doing things in the tank. This product makes it so you can just wipe the fingerprints/water marks off without having to get the cleaner out. It sprays in a very fine mist so the bottle lasts a very long time. I paid $4.69 for it through Marine Depot. It is allegedly non toxic but I am still careful to keep it out of the tank.

This is what it claims and it lives up to its claim:
This anti-static formula cleans glass aquariums to a sparkling shine and applies a revolutionary new protective glaze. With continued use, your aquarium glass will repel dust and resist water spots and fingerprints

I'm going to be really old fashioned here and say elbow grease. I keep a towel by the tank and when I see a spot I just buff it. I haven't used any cleaner but water and if I buff hard enough it looks great. When things start streaking I change towels.

Anyone ever try applying rain-x to a tank? I would imagine this would cause any water that may splash or drip on the outside glass to juat bead and roll off.

there is NO better glass cleaner in the world than dawn dishwashing liquid. a few drops in a half gallon of warm water and your glass will sparkle. i use it on all glass, windows, mirrors, you name it.

if you're worried about getting windex (or any other cleaner) in your tank, spray the towel or cloth instead of the tank itself..that's what i do. works wonders

My procedure:
Go to kitchen, grab a wad of paper towel and splish some ammonia on it.
Make the mistake of stiffing it to see how much ammonia is really in it.
Get off the floor, carry wad to tank and wipe sides.
Re-wipe with a dry paper towel.

I figure that this way, any limited amount of ammonia that does get into the water will be handled by the bio filtration quite easily.

I use a product called hi sheen. it's from sommer and maca, industrial glass cleaner. works great...i buy a box and use it for everything in the house/car. but, it's true...just be careful not to get it in your tank or on anything that might go into your tank. i'll usually spray it on a cotton cloth and then wipe it down...that way it doesn't get into the air.

They now make windex wipes. Much cheaper than the "aquarium wipes" and they work great. Dont have to worry about spraying or any chemicals getting in the tank.

I use water or a water/vintager solution, and dry with newspaper, it has a streak free shine.

Really?!?! Newspaper?!?! I gotta try that. The newspaper doesnt leave ink or smudges on the glass???
