Cleaning powerheads

and to get the vinegar off? just a fresh water bath?

Yup, just keep washing it in fresh water until you no longer smell any vinegar.

Vinegar isn't harmful to your reef tank, although it tends to lower pH. It is often recommended as a short term fix for acute high pH. And, if I'm not mistaken, some people use vinegar to supercharge their kalkwasser additions. Adding vinegar to the water allows it to dissolve twice as much kalk powder.

Thanks for the information Jeff; I was not aware of that. Its amazing the amount of information I have learn in only a couple of months since I join RC.

I just cleaned mine this weekend and I used straight vinegar. They look like new again! After soaking, just use a brush to clean off any stubborn coralline and then I soak them in fresh water for about an hour, changing the water occassionally. No problems!

Make sure you take off any rubber suction cups before because the vinegar will eat them away.

Dam Matt, thats a great point....I messed up some suction cups that way.

Also, straight vinegar is fine, but if you dilute it with water it will work just the same. Maybe take a little longer, if anything.
But your vinegar will go a long way....my gallon jug goes a long way cleaning powerheads.

vinegar is a dilute solution of ACETIC ACID, so it has the same chemical formula as acetic acid.
U never used vinegar and baking soda when u were a kid to create a rocket?

My point is to use the least amount of vinegar possible to clean your ph to avoid possible corrosion that's not noticed by the naked eye;)
