Cleaning tank help

tang reefer

New member
I bought a used 20gal acrylic tank off another member and am now in the process of cleaning it out and whatnot. I was searching the forums and found that some people used a vinegar/water mix to help with the mineral build ups. Can anyone elaborate more on the ratio of vinegar and water, how long I should let the solution sit in the tank for, and what type/brand of vinegar to use.
If there are other knowns methods to help clean tank please feel free and share.

muriatic acid is a much stronger and cheaper acid. a gallon at home depot is just a few dollars. you can probably dilute it 10:1.

just be careful. it is an acid after all.

Thanks for replying Carl
So how long should I leave the diluted muriatic acid running in my tank and pumps for and how should I clean them after.

muriatic may be cheaper, but white vinegar is much safer for someone new to acid-ology.

put 1/4-1/2 by volume vinegar to water in a spray bottle. Spray down all surfaces and let soak 10-20 minutes or so. use a plastic credit card to scrape down all sides. a razor will scratch the front as will buffer pads if there is any coralline algae or sand particles.
repeat process with frequent rinsing with garden hose.

If you go with the swimming pool cleaning acid, add minimal acid to mostly water container. If you add slowly water to a 1/4 full acid plastic spray bottle, it will get very hot and maybe melt.
