Cleaning with bleach

Both bleach and vinegar are safe to clean aquarium equipment right? I have something in my salt water mixing can that seems to be polluting my water to some degree so I have a bleach mixture in the can right now. Can I put my magdrive pump in that vinegar solution too? How long does it take for the bleach to evaporate out such that it is safe to use again?

What does everyone else use for cleaning?

Yes both of those are safe to use as long as you let the chlorine evaporate out. I believe it takes 24 hours for chlorine to turn into a gas. But I would wait two days just to be on the safe side and rinse the equipment a few time before putting it back into use. I would not recommend using soap to clean with.

Probably already know this but i just wanted to add to not use vinegar and bleach at the same time as it will produce chlorine gas. Do seperate soaks/rinses of the two.

Don't just wait for the bleach to evaporate on its own.

Use Sodium thiosulfate (De-chlor, or generic chlorine remover) to neutralize the bleach in containers, on decorations, pumps, etc.

Matt should have told you this, as he's done it literally hundreds of times.

I was going to tell you the same as Terry but since Matt didn't mention it I thought I was wrong.

i vote for do use vinegar and bleach at the same time to make chlorine gas.

if the chlorine is in the air its not in the water.

its also good for clearing your sinus's and otherwise stimulating your mucus membranes..

ymmv.

:)

Don't count on Matt to keep you people straight - he's too busy learning to crack vertebrae to fool with silly forums.

(Actually, it's a well-known fact chiropractic students spend 1% of their time studying, and the other 99% partying.)

Actually we hardly ever study. We spend our days in search of innocent victims to pound and crack. As a matter of fact they don't even have to be human, we aren't picky dogs, cats whatever we find if it has a spine or joint we are more then willing to "chiropract" it.

by the way, whats a vertebra? Is that what makes that popping sound?
