If you are safety conscious, I have been using muratic acid to clean my equipment for about 6 years. I use 1 part acid, 4 parts water. Avoid using it on ceramic shafts or stainless steel. Will clean that off in less than 5 min.

soak in 100% vinegar a couple of minutes. then use a toothbrush to clean it off.

Yes, vinegar smell gets old. My tank project was literally just turned off apparently. I've had everything including the tank soaking in vinegar and water.... I only have the tank to finish off, sick of smelling this stuff!

Vinegar would be the least toxic and easiest to rinse clean. The fumes from muriatic acid sets off my wife's asthma, she's very sensitive. Vinegar, while it smells, doesn't seem to bother her as much. The standard grocery store variety works really well for hard water deposits like that.

The fumes from muratic are toxic to people. When I say safety conscious, I mean having glove/goggles/and mask meant for that acid, and working in a well ventilated space. Muratic acid is very dangerous and should be handled as such. Bonus is you only have to deal with it for an hour max. No containers of vinegar fuming for hours.
