I would just clean them every 3 months. The first time disassemble them and take a look at the parts. If the build up is minor just run it in vinegar and water for a couple hours. If their is heavy build up clean them with a brush. Pay particular attention to the cooling port (hole in the magnet) and the upper bearing.
