closed loop pump with a powerhead?

I was planning to install a closed loop on a small tank 30"x18"x18" using a mag 9.5. I was going to mount the pump on a small shelf behind the tank and plumb the supply and return over the back of the tank with pvc and loc-line.
A friend has told me that the idea is ok, but the use of a mag 9.5 is not a good one because of the noise of the mag pumps.
What is a good pump that I can use with approx. the same flow( or a little more) ???
I have a mag 9.5 on another tank that is submerged and it is fairly quiet. Do they get noisey when used externally?
Thanks

They are a little noisy (mag7). But if you can keep them from vibrating on things with a mouse pad that cuts down on the noise a lot. I don't think it was much louder than the overflow if that helps.

My friend that doesn't like the mag pumps suggested that a Quiet One 4000 would be better.

i am running a mag12 externally as a closed loop and a quiet one 4000 submerged as my return pump, i have a thick mousepad underneath the mag and they are about the same noise level

I thought about a mag 12, but figured the noise level would be higher than a 9.5.
I'm going to try a Quiet One 4000.

I'm running a mag 9.5 and a mag 12 externally. At first the 9.5 run pretty noisy but now I think it's fairly quiet. The Quiet One is extremely silent running internally but I've never ran one externally so can't comment on that.

The Mag 12 is noticibly louder. But still quieter than my Iwaki MD-70RTL on a closed loop. Not that the pump itself is loud. It's the huge cooling fan that's making it loud.
