closed loop question?

Could someone please explain what this is to me i have seen people talk about it a couple of times and was wondering what is was and how it works.

A closed loop is a system where you simply take water directly from the main display tank and then pump it back in via jets/seaswirls/4-ways/etc. This is to increase flow in the tank without having to run all of the water through your sump or clutter your display with powerheads/tunze streams/etc. Done right, there is almost no plumbing/pumps visible in the tank.

i have seen some of these setups on here but have wondered how do you keep the fish/snails from being sucked in through the inlet pipe. Looks like this could happen easily and you would have a dead fish and a burnt up pump??
