Closed loop suggestions?

Hi,
Could anyone please recommend a closed loop pump for a 40 gal tank? Also, what would be the best way to feed the pump? I was thinking of just drilling the back of the tank directly and protecting it with an oversized strainer...

Thanks in advance!

Drilling the back of the tank is fine and that's probably what most people do. I'm not a pump expert, but I use Mag and Eheim pumps for the most part. The pump I bought for a never-completed closed loop was a Mag5.

Are mag pumps alright to run externally? I've seen melev's closed loop but I'm not sure if what worked for him will work for everyone (or me)...

They seem to work, but others claim that they're not as reliable as the Eheims, or I thought he said Eheims. There's not really much objective data on product quality.

I've only read of panworld's comparability to iwakis... how do they actually stack up though? Are they quiet? Are they as reliable as iwakis?

Anyone have experience with iwakis in a closed loop? I've only heard of them as return pumps and are notorious for being way noisy. How about the American iwakis? The price is really tempting but the noise issue is a biggy for me.

Hello-

I used a closed loop SCWD with 3/4 ID tubing and a mag 7 on my 40 gallon. it works well, but the darn mag broke when i was screwing the impeller cover back on it after cleaning. i know how to reattach the two pieces, it just snapped. i think it is a design problem, so i just purchased a eheim 1262 to run the closed loop, it just arrived yesterday, and i will hook it up and let you know... i looked at the other pumps, but didnt decided on the eheim from my combined research

I run a panworld 150ps on my becket style skimmer. It is not very load and is similar to the Japanese Iwaki's in reliability since they were both designed by the same person. I have a Mag 9 on a closed loop with a SCWD right now only because that is what I had laying around. I am planning on swapping this with an external pump maybe a t4. Mag pumps are very bad at handling any type of pressure application and I am probablly only getting about 400gph out of the pump. Tests of the SCWD's show that as you get to around 600 gph you only lose about 10% of your flow through the device but I estimate I am losing about 50%. This probably won't be an issue if you are not using some type of mechanical switching device but if you are I would go with a pressure rated pump.

Cool... please let me know how it goes. I actually looked at the eheim pumps as an option but am leaning towards a higher output pump - something towards 1200 gph. Still, I'd love to hear how the eheim works out in this application.

i am using a panworld 50px-x (1110gph) on a closed loop. they are quieter than iwakis. just a small humming from the fan, but not bad.

Thanks... that pretty much answers my question. I'll probably go a bit bigger though and put in an order for the 100PX-X.

Thanks for the input everyone! I'll definitely post pics of the tank in a few weeks.
