closed loop

I am having trouble keeping my closed loop running after priming. Can someone please help me on this. We have even went as far as buying a new pump thinking that the old one was malfunctioning and it is doing the same thing. If we put a powerheader in the tube for priming it will run, but as soon as you take it out and put the plug in, it stops running. I even tried just putting my hand over it before putting plug in and it stayed running then, but again when the plug was put in it stopped. Thank you for any help given. Debbie

Also what kind of pump and details on how the thing is plumbed would be helpful

Is the filter you are using full of water? Must be full first before it will siphon and the pump will actually draw the water itself. Leave plugs alone, unless you are going to siphon the air out yourself.
