Closing Clams

Has anybody experienced their clams just closing up? I suppose it's not a good sign. It was flourishing forever, then I put in another clam, then now they are both shut. Somebody please give me some tips.

what fish do you have in the tank? Hopefully the new clam didn't bring pinched mantle disease or some parasite.

as per above, please list all your fish and inverts.

what and how you dose?

did you check the clams for pyramid snails?? they are a small nocturnal snail that will attack the clams mantle. its best to look a few hours after lights out, so the snails have a chance to come out of hiding.

also post a pic or two if you can.

Fish include: marine bettas, baby panther grouper, purple firefish, lawnmower blenny, engineer goby. Inverts: fire shrimp.

I do not dose much of anything unless my levels are off. I do a small water change about every two weeks.

How do you check for pyramid snails? I'll try getting pictures tomorrow.

keep an eye on the LMB, some have had problems with them in the past. i never did, though he did like to sit on the clams scutes.

the panther grouper is not a reef safe fish and gets very large very fast. he will eat any fish or inverts he can get in his mouth, you may want to reconsider this choice.

to test if it is one of the fish bothering the clam, use half a pop bottle with some holes for flow to cover the clam. if the clam starts to open, then you know he is being harassed.

to check for pyramids, look under the clams mantle or in his scutes a few hours after lights out. they are a small white conical snail.

you say you don't dose much, how do you maintain Ca and Alk??

and please list your current parameters.

First off, thanks so much for all the ideas and tips. I found one pyramid snail under one of the clams. Should I constantly check for them, now that I found one? Secondly, I noticed today that my lmb was picking on the clams. Needless to say, it is going in my other tank. I do buffer my water with RO and some coral builder. I use some Kent Turbo Calcium to dose for Ca.

My current parameters are:
SG- 1.025
Temp-79
PH-8
ALK-15
NO2-0
NO3-0
NH3-0
Phosphate-4
Calcium-380

I dont have kits to test iodine, strontium, and magnesium.

I would just check for the snails maybe once or twice a week to monitor any increase in population to be safe. Once you get the LMB out they should start to open back up normally.
