cloudy water and anenome

Okay, here is the story. Saturday I did my weekly water change. I then bought a bubble tip anenome from AA. Everything is cool. He finds a nice little spot kind of under a rock and seems happy. Sunday I feed him a nice big silverside. He devours it. At 9 o'clock Sunday night the lights turn off. At 11 he has decided to explore a bit and is crawling up the back of the tank. I go to bed.

This morning, the tank is cloudy. The anenome is attached to the rock but it is in the back and I can't get a good look at him. ALSO, I notice some white stuff all around the rocks. It looks fleshy to me.

I have a really small pump attached to the back of the tank pointing up toward the surface at an angle. I believe that more surface agitation is a good thing. It is where the oxygen exchange occurs.

My theory is that perhaps the anenome maybe got a finger sucked into the pump somehow.

I say that because I remember reading a post on RC about someone who had an anenome get stuck in his pump with the same symtoms.

However, in the back of my mind I seem to recall something about anenomes can expel some kind of cloudy substance for what reason I don't remember. Maybe someone has some knowledge about that?

Anyway, I have to work to support my reef habit, and left the tank for now. My plan for now is to stop at LFS and get some carbon and see if that helps the cloudiness. I'll check the water when I get home and maybe do a 10 or 20 % water change.

It could be many things but it sure doesn't help to feed it a "nice big silverside"; you should be feeding it chunks no larger than a pea or lima bean.
Feeding items too large to digest will either cause the bulk to be expelled from the specimen or if it keeps it, the item fed will begin to rot before it can be digested and kill your anemone.

This is a common mistake with larger predators also, ie... Groupers, Lions and frogfishes.

DOH! They said to feed him a whole silverfish. They forgot to mention to do it in small pieces. I need to put a sign on my forehead "Newbie" so they explain what they mean.

That would explain the white stuff if he expelled it.

He is still on a rock in the back facing the back of the tank, so I can't see him very well. I can see his outter edges, and his tenacles look good.

I added some charcoal tonight. Will see how that works overnight.

Will check the water right now for ammonia spike.
