Yesterday I found one of my clowns had went sump surfing and was stuck on a downward flow side of a baffle. I put it in a bowl to observe and seen the poor guy was stuck upside down and struggled to get from the surface. The clown had a bloated belly too.
Now this morning I look in the bowl expecting the worse but the little fish is laying on the bottom now, looks like its resting. The belly looks normal but it isnt swimminig around much. I say it looks better today.
BUT.....
I also have a mated pair of maroons in this tank. The large one (6+ inches) is showing the exact same signs today. She is upside down, bloated, and cant really keep from floating.
These fish have been very active, healthy, and have shown no signs of disease or sickness untill yesterday.
I did just start feeding some free dry food to these fish in the past 3 or 4 weeks. Not more than once a day and they eat it all in less than a minute.
Ocean Nutrition brine shrimp plus flakes and Marineland labs Bio Blend pellets. I did feed the large clown some food lastnight before I went to bed.
I wouldnt imagine this stuff to be 'bad' food but I can see how they may have goten too much dry food down thier gullet- then it swelled as water saturated the food causing the bloat....?
So I have a second clownfish come up with this condition and I have changed nothing- no water changes, no new tank mates or rock or corals in weeks. The only thing I can think of is the first clown was sump surfing (fine before that the last I seen) and the dry food lastnight causing the largest clown to be floating this morning.
I dont really want to fool around with a waterchange or QT right now because of the added stress and I dont think that will help. I think the small clown looks better today, so I will wait it out and see if they both can get thier self swimming in proper position.
If anyone has any words of wisdom or advice I would appreciate it much.
