Clown fish

Hey Reefers,

So I'm starting to look at live stock and research them.

I've read that you shouldn't have more than 2 clown fish and if you do to get 5 or more at the same time when they are young.

My question is, does this apply to all species? Me and could I have 2 of a few different species of clowns?

I was looking at the regular clown fish and perhaps also having a pair of black clowns as well.

Only one pair of clowns per tank and they need to be of the same type, otherwise they will fight.

One species per tank, unless you have a tank larger than 250 gallons you can risk trying two paired species.


You can do two clowns (one pair) of the same species but different designs. For example, you can do a "naked" and a "midnight" together because they are both ocellaris just different designer colors. But you CAN'T do a Clarkii and a percula. You can do a black ocellaris with a orange ocellaris, but I do recommend the black being the female (larger one) for less fighting.

I have a Davinci and a black snowflake together in my 125. They are fine together because both are ocellaris, but they are the only two clowns in that tank.


Does that help clear that up? Or did I just confuse you more?

5 clowns in a tank wouldn't be a good idea ether unless it's a large tank. And Dogshowgrl has given you some good advice about species. I have heard of a few tanks that have a harem of clowns, but that is usually a very large number of clowns in a fairly small tank.
