Clown in a new tank

My tank has been running for a week and 4 days now. The levels are all low, 10 lbs of live rock is covered in the coraline algae, i bought that carib sea live sand that comes in a sealed bag containing sea water. So the question is: my lfs store said i could have 3 chromis for free or 12 dollars toward anything else in the store. Would yall recommend putting one tank bred percula or ocellaris clown fish in the tank instead of the 3 chromis? I don't want to hur any fish. Do you think it will survive? Thanks!!

what size is the tank? I think 1 clown would survive in any tank 3 chromis would, but just b/c a LFS will sell it to ya doesn't mean its a good idea

You say that your levels are low, but how low? If you are still getting ammonia readings, then your cycle isn't finished. In most cases a week and a half isn't long enough for the cycle to be done.

I would make sure your ammonia and nitrite levels are absolutely 0 before adding any livestock, otherwise it is money and lives down the tube.

Personally in a 30g I'd go with one clown. Some chromis can get large and they can also fight so in that size tank I'd stick with something cute, durable and goofy and the clown is a great one to begin with!

30 gal is plenty of room for the 3 chromis and a pair of clowns with adequate rock and hiding. Definately wait for the ammonia and nitrate/nitrite levels to be 0 before you put any of them in their though.

Sorry, but that simply isn't true. With that size tank the odds are you would end up with 2 clowns and 1 chromis.

Sorry, but .. my friend has a 20 gal long with a pair of occelaris clowns, 2 chromis, a sixline wrasse and a cleaner shrimp and they have all been perfectly fine for about 6 months now no fighting or casualties. I have a pair of ocellaris in my 40 gal reef tank with 2 dwarf angels, 2 chromis, a strawberry dottyback, a blue hippo tang, a cleaner shrimp, a coral banded shrimp and all of them are doing perfectly fine.

First your friends tank is overstocked, and 6 months is not nearly enough time to say that everything is going fine.

And as for your 40, I only see trouble for it. But, according to your hobby experience, "I know enough".....

wait.... how is your friend getting away with a blue hippo in a 20 gallon? sounds crazy to me. I wouldn't even do that in my thirty gallon unless the tang was like 1/2". By the way I added the Chromis and they seem to be doing great, swimming around like crazy and eating brine shrimps like pros. Lets hope they survive!! My params are at 0 right now, lets hope they stay down. I added the seachem stabilizer, hope that works!!

Just keep an eye on the Chromis, I have always had issues with them, issues with them taking each other out. Some other people have had that same issue, and others haven't. Hopefully you will be one of the ones that don't have issues.

ok bro. well first of all my friend doesnt have the blue tang.. i do. its in my 40 gal. And his tank is doing perfectly fine. He has a very healthy bta and lots of xenia colonies with mushrooms that have split and covered lots of his rocks. But yea, i do know enough. I know enough to have work at a store that has been rated 5 stars for the past 16 years. But you're like every other person that spends all their time on here getting your rocks off by giving advice to people all day. Ide say having over 8000 posts on a fish tank website is somewhat sad. You probably are the kind of guy on here that tells people they cant keep a BTA unless them have like 9 wpg and metal halides. When i have succesfully kept a bta under my 2x96w pc's. And you think you can have like 1 fish for every 10 gallons. I hope everyone on this website doesnt take everything that the people on here say to heart all the time cuz most of the time its just people giving out stupid advice that they dont even follow.
