So about 7 days ago I got a small clown trigger & a small huma for my 180. My thoughts were if I get them tiny they should do well together for quite some time. When I first placed them in the tank they both swam for a good bit then the Huma dissappeared. I couldnt find him anywhere, we pulled the canopy off & the lights checked the overflows & no sign of him. A couple days later he appeared swimming all over the place & eating like a pig.

Now I havent seen the clown trigger at all. Its been 3 days. I havent even seen him come out to eat. Hes not in the overflows & im assuming hes still alive. Is this normal? Should I be concerned? I would like to add theClown had been at my LFS for atleast a month & was eating like a champ. Is it time to be concerned or am I jumping the gun? Any help from you Trigger folks would be appreciated.

Also Please dont start slamming me like the tang police saying the 180 is to small. Its a good starting point for them for now they are tiny & the 180 has very few fish in it. 1 sailfin tang & mated pair of clowns along with a gobie.
Once they get super large the 300 gallon lagoon inmy basement should be complete. Also my spelling may be a little off but I been in the SAilor Jerry Rum.
 
I've read that small clown triggers are very difficult to keep alive. You want the more medium sized ones. Unfortunately, those are also the more aggressive. One of those catch 22's. So maybe he is dead, or maybe not. When I had my clown trigger (med size) he would never hide for more than 30 - 40 minutes.
 
I guess Ill check my overflows again pull the canopy & lights. Kinda a PITA but well see what happens. Not really what I wanted to hear.

Ya, if you have not seen him at all for 3 days even after puting food in the water then I would presume the worst. Triggers, and I would think especially a young clown, will at least peak out when food hits the water. Unfortunately, I would look between my rocks (and under them) to see if he died b/c you do not want him decomposing in there. Triggers can lock themselves in between or under rocks which is where I bet you find him.
 
Unfortunatly taking all the rock out at the moment isnt a option. Ive turned off the pumps & looked all through it with a flashlight no sign of him. Hes not behind the tank or in a overflow either I just checked. Im gonna assume hes dead but it sure would be nice in a week or 2 to see him out & about.

I know triggers can lock themselves in rocks but can they get stuck?
 
I do not think they get stuck but if they die in the rocks in a locked position (with their trigger out) they can remain wedged in the rocks without the body floating to the surface. I would look in the crevaces between and under rocks and see if you can located him there.
 
If I dont see him by tomorrow it looks like I may be pulling out some pieces of rock to do a inspection.....
 
Will do. I'm really hoping he's just hiding when the lights are on but I'm beginning to think the worst. It always seems to be the expensive fish that disappear. :(
 
I tried a few small clowns and never any success. They would eat fine and then one day go missing always found them under a rock or something
 
I've had good success with my clown. I got him when he was the size of a quarter and now he's grown pretty big (4+ inches). Never had any issues with him, always ate like a pig and was very outgoing.
 
Negative.... I pulled a few larger oieces of my Marshall Island rock out & hes still no where to be found. Im gonna get my wife to help me get the llights & canopy off tonight & may just completely reaquascape the tank & see if he turns up. Im having a major issue now with the tank that has me kinda concerned. I will update that topic when I get home tonight & get some things moved around. :(
 
Ok. I moved every rock out of the tank which really sucked because I loved my aquascape. He was not in any of the rocks & I couldn't find him in the substrate either. I guess he just disappeared. I didn't even attempt to try to recreate the way it looked before so I just did it completly opposite. Hopefully when the sand storm clears up I'll like it. I would like to add my tiny huma huma popped my hands many at time. It was nerve racking.

Could he have gotten into your overlfow and made his way to your sump/refugium? I would also check around the tank and in the stand in case he jumped?
