Clown Trigger & Zebra Eel

Hi everyone,

I have a question. Does anyone know if a clown trigger and a zebra eel would get along okay? I know clown triggers once they get to a certain size can become quite mean and kill a lot of tankmates.. but I didn't know if they would attack an eel as well?

Zebra eels are pretty docile compared to other eels. I have one and my bf wants to put a small baby clown in with it. Getting a large tank for it is not a problem, but I don't want to put my eel into danger by the clown attacking and killing it.

Thanks!

Im not sure about a Clown Trigger. I had zebra eels with other triggers and there were never any problems. I don't think there will be a problem if the clown is small right now. Now if it was a much bigger clown and you were adding the eel then there might be an issue.

No.. we were going to buy a baby clown.... my zebra eel is about 20" right now.. and very docile. He's been in with other fish and things with no problems... but I've always read that the Clown Triggers are so aggressive... at least some point in their life as they mature.

Thanks for the info!

Anyone else?

Hit or miss, but if you get a youngster you will likely have a few years before you have to worry. My guess would be you should be ok, however CT's are known to snap after several years of good behavior

The Clown trigger will fight with the Zebra Eel after short time about six to nine months for the food . I had a clown trigger in my FO tank for five years experience taught me , The clown trigger will fight and some times kill fish, after it get some size to them when they have the same dietary needs .
I now keep a small Clown trigger in my 200G reef tank .
The Clown Trigger is 2 1/2" long and attacks the Flame hawkfish when he try to steel a prawn from him.:D

Thanks guys for the info. Beautiful trigger!

I'm not worried about them fighting over the food. I always tong feed my eel and can deal with the trigger during feeding. The eel always stays inside a cave and rockwork. So... during feeding I'm not worried about the attack.

What I was worried about is the trigger gets mad and just decided to kill the eel like I have heard they can at times.

Does anyone know about what size this can happen?

I had my old one with a large tuskfish in a 125G FOWLR tank only time i had problems was feeding time .
They stay together for five years they had some fights but no killing here .

I would not do it under any circumstances. The Zebra will not fight back, and I already had to remove a Niger Trigger because it was trying to bite my Zebras.

Both of my Zebras are about 3 feet long. They are Teddy bears. I can pick them up, and they never try to bite.

How big was the trigger when it tried to bite them?

My zebra is just under 2" and is also a teddy bear. They are great eels =)

My zebra is docile too--I would be concerned about putting in such an aggressive fish as a clown trig.

Maybe your boyfriend should get a new tank for the clown??
