Clownfish Fry Raising Journal

I have a mated pair if Ocellaris clowns. They started laying their eggs after being in my 29 gal together for about a year. This is my fifth batch with them. So far I haven't had a long term survivor. My female is laying eggs every 13 to 14 days.

We recently bought Clownfishes by Joyce Wilkerson which has been a huge help! After reading we've made some adjustments that I think are going to be very helpful. Right now I'm keeping their tank around 80 degree's. Keeping it at this degree stimulates rapid larvae growth. My egg's will usually hatch at around 8 day's. Before the tank was around 75 and taking 11 days to hatch. With the shorter growth period I've noticed I have a larger egg survival rate.

We have a 10 gal tank set up for them right next to the 29 so they can be transferred easily. All four sides are blacked out by construction paper. We have a small light on the top so the fry are able to see the rots for feeding. We have a nice rotifer culture growing in our garage for the fry's, as well as greenwater.

I currently have egg's that I think will hatch tonight or tomorrow night. I still have around 200 egg's I think. The pics I'm posting are from my camera phone so they're not the best. I'll post ones from my actual camera as I go along. Also, the 29 gal needs some cleaning.lol When they have egg's I try to keep my hands our of their tank. So as soon as the egg's hatch it's getting a nice cleaning. :)

Clownfish Fry Raising

Clownfish Fry Raising

Nice start, Joyce has a great book ! Frank Hoff has an excellent one too.

I noticed the blue damsel standing by for a quick snack. One of my favorite fish.

Good luck with the raising, I think you should do well.

the temp is the key. from my experience and advise that has been given to me. the higher temp 80 to 83 will give you a more healthy batch. by day eleven the larvae have eaten their yolk sac and are now starving or dead.

for the rotifers remember to use some prime or other dechlorinator. that is one thing that i found out that helped my rotifers from crashing. adding a cap full everyday.
