Clownfish Question

Do clownfish need to host something? I just got a pair of black and whites yesterday and was just curious. They are swimming all around my tank and are very active. The last pair I had hosted within the first hour but they soon died after :(

No, clownfishes do not have to host something. I had an occelaris host my goniopora (flower pot) before, pretty cool. Right now I have a percula for over a year and he is not hosting anything. I even have an anemone in the tank. He is fat and healthy.

No, they will generally pick an area of your tank and gravitate towards that location, but since they generally are not going to have any predators in a home aquarium, there's no need for them to have a host anemone or any other such creature. Some people will add anemone-like creatures in the hopes that their clownfish will use them as a host, but this is also not necessary. If you would like to try something like that, some common surrugate hosts are any of the Euphyllia genus (Hammer corals, frogspawn or torch corals), toadstool corals, or many of the various species of mushrooms. There's never any guarantee that a clownfish will use any of these (including actual anemones) as a host.
