i have had my clowns for 5 days now, and today i noticed that one is on the floor breathing heavily and the other is guarding him.

is this normal or should i be worried?

-test water
-quarantine (I have qt'd the pair when one was sick, if they were a mated pair and I thought it would help reduce the stress of separation).
-try to diagnose and treat in qt.

Fast breathing could be a number of things. Any other physical symptoms? Infection? Coloration? Not eating? Stringy poop?

Consider the fish on it's way out. If the problem can be diagnosed and treated ASAP, you might be able to help it recover.

I always keep these meds on hand.
-maracyn I and II (bacterial infections, gran pos and gram neg)
-prazipro (internal parasites, intestinal worms)
-formalin (external parasites/fungus)
-cupramine (ich)
-metronidazole (alternative antibacterial)

+

-vitamin supplement
-garlic supplement

At this point it is key to try to diagnose, and as necessary treat with the appropriate med. Sometimes it is hard to diagnose, and you'll need to rely on a best guess for treatment.

well, hes dead now...

i will treat the entire tank and from now on ill quarantine

if i want to buy another clown, lets say next month, would they fight?
the clown still alive is about 1.5 inches now

Careful treating a display tank. Meds in a display can be a bad idea. Sometimes deadly to inverts and/or corals. It may be ok to just leave the tank be at this point. Just remove the dead fish quickly and hope whatever it was doesn't spread.

It'll be fine to get another clown later. One of my breeding pair died... I quarantined the new clown in a tank next to the display. They saw each other so weren't entirely unfamiliar to each other. They immediately bonded when introduced.

There are some discussions on the pairing topic in the forums. Basically try to get a smaller fish than the established one. The established larger fish should become the female and the juvenile will take on the male role. They may spat a bit at first to establish dominance.
