clowns and damsels

I have two domino damsels and they ar fairly peaceful and have vibrant personalities. I also have two yellowtails and one is extremely aggressive and patrols the entire tank while the other has a cubbyhole in the live rock that he hangs out in and protects from the other fish. The dominoes are my favorite. I will be keeping them and taking the yellowtails back to the LFS to trade in on a lawnmower blenny.

i've heard dominoes to be the most agressive. I would skip the damsels, that or get a big(5-6") gold stripe maroon clown. but then you probably wouldn't have a damsel anymore. i would suggest a watchman goby and any sorts to go along with you clown. ( if you go with the gsm, get a pair of juvies, you can do the same with the gobies if you want)

puffer - i have a 55 and i recommend a lawnmower blenny. they are super cool and all your friends will think it's awesome. i PERSONALLY wouldn't put clownfish in with my damsels (i have 1 striped (i think it's three stipe) and 2 blue ones (they never told me what they are called at the store). anyway, it would be a shame to see a cute little clownfish get killed by those little terrorists. but do what you want my friend.

im not 100% sure, but im pretty sure that domino is just another name for 3 & 4 stripe damsels... regardless.... most of the cheaper damsels will be aggressive with the rare exceptions...

Domino damsels are solid black with three white dots. They are shaped like a clownfish and will host on anenomes like clownfish. My two are not that aggressive. In fact, they don't bother anything. They just swim around and look for food and come to the side of the tank when someone walks up. They come up and investigate whenever I move a rock or clean the glass. My two yellowtail damsels are aggressive and also skittish. Go figure.

i stand corrected then... my lfs calls the 3 and 4 stripes domino for some reason, but i looked them up on google and sure enough... different fish, although they do have the same body shape and I can vouch that 3&4 stripes are mean little ****s....

ok i think i will get two clowns and a domino damsel and if its aggrasvive i will give it to someone. thanksfor all your help. oh but what do damsels eat. brand names and what do clowns eat.

mine have always eaten pretty much any kind of flake or frozen food you toss in.... you could get away with just some decent marine flake

Dittos. They are not picky eaters. If it falls in the water, they will eat it. If it's not edible, they spit it out. But they will eat almost anything. What's good for them is a different matter, I do 50/50 flake/frozen omnivore food.

I tried to keep a clown with a damsel and all was well because I checked on them alll the time. Then I went on vacation and told my wife to watch them. She feed them well but didn't notice that the clown was getting picked on. When I got back the poor clown was missing his tail. I was ready to get a spear gun to get that little snot out of my tank. I gave him to the LFS and I hope they feed him to a lion fish.

After that eveyone must get along, and now they do.

I would skip the damsel :uzi:

Damsels are really a crapshoot on behavior. Generally thae darker the color they are the meaner they are. Domino, 3 and 4 stripe are the worst. Blues and yellowtails aren't much better. Azure, Talbots, and Chromis are generally ok. I have a Talbots and he's a little gentleman. If your dead set on getting a damsel add it to the system last. It will likely nail anything you add after it.

Damsels as a general group vary greatly in behavior, even with individuals, but some species are considerably peaceful as well. As bertoni mentioned, all clownfish are actually a subset of damselfish, their division by color into a separate group is more of an artificial one hobbyists make. As such, there are traits that many damselfish as a whole share; one is that they patrol a rather small territory of the reef, and evolve territorial behaviors to protect their homes as a result.

To help out with identity, it's best to use latin names to avoid confusion, but if you can't do that, at least try to use the most common common names. In that regards, the domino damselfish is on the rather territorial end of the spectrum. It depends quite a bit on the environment they are in as well. This is what a domino looks like:

From my experience, some damsels make wonderful and peaceful additions to the tank; the orangetail is a good example.
