Clowns are some resilient fish...

A few hours ago I was just sitting here reading the forums and relaxing from my day at work when something one of my cats was doing got my attention. He had been jumping around my reef tank but that is not unusual, he loves to watch the fish swim and can stay there for hours. He kept running back and forth and I could tell he was playing with some thing, I figured one of his toys had become lodged in the stand some how. A while later his racket got the best of me and I decided I would investigate.

I found my clown laying on the carpet and Phil (the tabby) was tapping at him. I thought to my self that this was the end for my clown as Phil had been running around for at least twenty minutes. I picked up the fish and put him in back in the tank (after wiping it down gently), I had some spare netting so I made a make shift cage to hold it. I figured that he was a goner...

About thirty minutes later (had an important phone call) when I returned to check on him the net / cage was empty. Crap, I figured he died and floated out. I started to pull my rock work out so I could dispose of the little guy properly and the next thing I know, he was nipping at my hands just like he always does when I am feeding him.

I have been watching him closely for the last hour or so and he and his friend (yellow tang) have been surfing the 6100 waves like they alway do.

I knew they were tough fish but... Mine thinks he is invincible...

I have had him for years and he has never jumped, come to think of it I have never had a fish jump. Might have to rethink the egg crate now.

I think they will all get a little treat tonight just for the heck of it.

As someones sig once said , Clownfish are Damsels in pretty pajamas. Congrats on the rescue ...........

I'd suggest the eggcrate sooner than later. A friends cat discovered that if it lunged at his freshwater tank a tasty morsel would jump out. He lost several fish that just "disappeared" before he finally caught it in the act. The fish would jump at the glass a few times and then saunter around to the back of the tank to pick up it's fish to go meal.

Congratulations on the rescue. Just wondering if you have a ground probe on your tank? I've read that stray voltage can sometimes cause fish to jump. Guess cats aren't the only animals with nine lives!

Both of my clowns have jumped once. One through a tiny gap in the eggcrate due to it sitting on a power chord. Luckily I was in the room both times. They had a bad habbit of sleeping on the surface. Made it hard for me to sleep sometimes. One jump for each is all it took, and they don't sleep at the surface anymore. Not once since it happened to the male.

Still I think eggcrate is a good idea. I plan on switching to some birdnetting when I get around to it...

Nice save glad he made it. I have lost a Blue spot Jawfish from a very small 1 by 1 inch hole and covered it up immediately. Never had any more problems.

I have a ground probe, I believe he just saw me walk by and thought it was feeding time. My chromis and the clown make the tank look like a shark frenzy when they think or are being fed.

He was resting in his little sleeping spot this morning when I left for work. I'll be sure and get his superman outfit when I make it to the LFS next time.

before i installed eggcrate in my overflow both my clowns would end up in my filter sock , they take the ride straight down the overflow and through the pipes and get stuck in a very small filter sock. I remember raising the sock out of the water and seeing the 2 clowns just lying still in the bag.I dipped the sock back in the water and they started to do their clown dance,...I was shocked. They really are a tough fish.

Well, he didn't make it. He lasted a couple of days but today when I returned home he was gone. I guess the stress was too much. He never ate like he normally did after the 'incident'. He had gone allot longer without food (if I was out of town) so I know that wasn't it. I had him in a quarantine tank so the stress would be as low as possible but the trauma must had been fatal.

I'm gonna miss the little guy, he had one heck of a personality.

RIP dude...

My clown jumped a couple of weeks ago and when I found him the carpet... he was dry. I put him back in and he sat near the bottom for a few minutes and then he was fine.
