Clowns & Fighting

Hello everyone,

I have two Picasso Clowns that I purchased about a month or two ago. They were purchased separately (about 3 days apart), but were in the same tank at the LFS. I originally purchased two at the same time, but one jumped in the middle of the night while I was sleeping because my tank was open top. Later I went back and purchased another. They were fine in the aquarium that I had them in, but I upgraded to one a bit bigger, they were fine for a couple of days and now they won't stop fighting. I read that they fight when trying to decided who will be the female but they said they typically fight for only a few days, mine have been fighting for about two weeks now.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated thanks.

All clowns are male till the change, the dominate clown will change to female. The only way I know without dissecting is the smaller clown is the male. To answer your question is that you have two dominate clowns try to be female, one will give in and let the other be female or one will die. I suggest remove the smaller of the two and trade with LFS for a smaller clown. Sorry to say even then there is no guaranty the will get along.

You might put the smaller one in a little hang-on 'breeder box' so they can see each other but not fight; & let them get acclimated that way for awhile. Then try introducing littler one into tank if they calm down.
