clowns floating at night

Every night when the lights go out I find my clowns floating at the top of the tank, almost as if they are dead. When the lights come back on they go back to their normal behavior. Is this normal or is it because of high flow? The tank is a 55G. Nitrates < 5 ammonia 0 nitrite 0 flow 620 GPH pump from sump up 3 feet. 1 200GPH power head.

Your return line doesn't add much flow, if any. Also, did you mean x1 200GPH powerhead or a 1200GPH powerhead?

Its a aqua clear 402 I bought second hand. Not sure on its flow. I also have an attachment on the inlet that spins to agitate the water up from the sump. Website says 270 GPH

My two platinum snowflake clowns do the same thing. From what I have read it is normal almost like they are hosting that part of the tank. Mine are fine during the day also and will swim everywhere around the tank.

270GPH is nowhere near enough for a 55. I would consider upgrading

Mine do that. I've never actually seen them sleep, just hover somewhere at the top or bottom of the tank looking half drunk. I've had my pair for about 5 months now, one has gotten substantially bigger than the other, and they are both happy, healthy, and growing. So, I don't know exactly what they're doing floating at night, but at least for mine, I'm sure it isn't anything problematic.

Standard behavior. Fish bed down at night. Without an anenome or coral they like clowns stay near pumps and such at night. The one that is bigger is a female and the other is a male.
