clowns in a damsel set up

I have a 30 gallon, 31 inch long tank with 3 yellow tailed damsels and 1 black neon damsel. I have created a ridge with plenty of places to hide and all 4 of the damsels are settled and tolerant of each other. They were the first in the tank and no other species of fish have been housed with them. My wife would like to purchase 2 clown fish. Would this cause any problems?

Yup.

You will have to rearrange all the rockwork before you introduce the clownfish in there. The damsels have already claimed their territories so any newcomers will be treated harshly. And unless you are buying an already mated pair of clowns, they won't stick up for each other. So they will be at a distinct disadvantage. Even with the rearranging there may still be trouble. You will have to keep an eye on the tank and interfere if things get too crazy for the clowns.

Other things you could do would include removing the damsels to another tank and allowing the clowns to establish themselves for a couple of weeks, or you could put up a divider within the tank to do the same thing.

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. I will speak to my wife about what you have suggested. I recently housed all four damsels in a 12 gallon Orca nano tank while I added more rock and built up the central ridge in their tank and they got on fine together , so I think I maybe able to get away with your suggestion of allowing the clowns to set up their territory first. Guess it's up to my wife. I have just started to research clowns and it will be a few weeks before I think I will be ready to take them on.

Once again thanks for you're help.
