cockroach slug? (need id!)

I've had my 46G tank for about 6 months and just this week I discovered a new critter that must have hitchhiked with the live rock. I had never seen him before and appears to be nocturnal because I saw him late at night eating algae off the filter inlet tube.

I don't have a picture of it but it was about 1.5" long, 0.5" wide and had what looked like a hard shell very similar to a sea cockroach or sea slater but it had no legs or antennae- it moved around like a slug. The shell was dark gray or brown and it even had some pink coralline algae growing on it. Any idea of what it is?

do a search for Stomatella varia. There are lots of posts & pictures here on RC. It's a harmless grazer.

I searched for Stomatella and found some pics but that's definitely not it- the shell doesn't match. But I looked around some more and found a matching picture: it's a chiton. Mystery solved!
