cold water reef pics

Fantastic ! I've thought about it a lot recently but i think i'll wait, i dont think Alabama heat and the tank would work well together.

My inspiration ????

I'd have to say that it was the strawberry anemones that got me interested in marine tanks to begin with many years ago. I guess I thought it was time to venture into that direction and explore the potential of cold tank keeping since few werre doing it.

new pics....

I'm in LA on a business trip....so, maybe a few new ones next week.

Reminds me of diving off the coast of San Diego on a shipwreck covered in those anemones (I think it was "Ruby Red"). Very well done Steve, looks just like a display at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Have you always had the white bar boxfish in this tank? Didn't you have him in your main "warm" water reef aquarium for awhile? How did he fare in the warmer water?

Can't wait to see updated pics!

Ah yes,

Thank you Worldwithin, that is the wreck I'm talking about. One of my favorite coldwater dives. The wreck was absolutely covered in those beautiful red and pink anemones, I would highly recommend the dive to anyone who is certified (a deeper, cold dive btw)

You should check out the dive while you are in LA Steve! It would be right up your ally since those anemones got you into this crazy reefkeeping world.

You show a picture of a male Shaw's box fish. What are the other two in that pic of the whole tank? Are those both female Shaw's box fish?

Those are indeed two female Shaws boxfish.

My white bar (aka flame boxfish) was in my warm water system for about six weeks while his cold water system was being readied. In that time, his colors faded a bit and he just became sickly looking......upon hitting the cold water, he picked right up after a few days.

Superb. Absolutely superb.

I've had a 50 gal tank with built-in refridgeration unit down in my basement for a couple years now that was used to hold collected coldwater marine organisms for a lab: slate bottom, double-paned glass, etc. It can drop the temp down to around 43*F. I've been wanting to revamp it and get it up and running, and this thread has reinspired me!

Steve, I think I can get you in touch with a few divers/coldwater hobbyists in the Seattle area that should be able to locate you some strawberry anemonies if you can make the trip up to get them. I'll drop you a PM with some more info.

And again, great work!

Actually, I was up there last week near Anacortes by Washington Park where supposely some were....but....not so much. I'm going to try to go near Deception Pass and see whats there....any suggestion on where I might find them ??

I haven't done enough diving around the Sound to really know their locations--mostly just around the Point Defiance area and the west side of Whidbey Island, and I don't recall seeing them in those areas. I'm sure further north toward B.C. (without actually going international over the border) would yield you some better luck (they seem to become more plentiful the further north you go).

I would suggest going here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/coldwaterfish/ It's a Yahoo e-mail group full of people from the PNW who keep and collect coldwater marine life. They frequently have collecting trips and welcome those who want to come along--if anyone can get them for you and/or show you where to find them, I think these guys can. This is the info I was going to PM you about. Check it out and drop them a line.

LOL, looks like Steve is already diving with the crew on the "coldwaterfish" board!

Quick Q for you PNW guys... is it legal to ship what you collect? With regard to my earlier post -- it would be a lot more comfortable getting a cold water tank running if I knew folks could grab goodies and ship 'em to CO.

Its obvious this tank has caught everyones eye....

INCLUDING MY OWN!

really awsome.... the mroe I look at the the more I am scheming as to how I can do this ! HAHA

Skysdale.....yep.....been there. They are a great group.....but, the strawberies are elusive. I'm also pursuing potential strawberries from the Monterey area too.....we'll see.

As for shipping.....there is at least one guy from the above posted board that would ship. He used to collect and ship in the past....and he is considering getting back into it.

Okay I tried to read every one of the posts in this long thread, and so I may have missed this, if so I am sorry.

Where did you get the anemones that you have? Did you go collect those with your rock? Did you go diving for that rock?

Your Aquascaping is soo dope!

BUMP!! The downide of RC being so big is that little gems like this kick the dust, and all of us without PMs cant even search for them again :(
