that is really cool. Not something you see everyday or at all for that matter!

most of those fish come out of australia correct? Like the blue devil?

nicely done.. its awesome that beautiful things DO come out of coldwater!! haha

more pics when you get a chance

It is true that, technically, this would be a temperate reef. I would classify anything below 50 as truly cold....but, heck....there's not many temperate, let alone cold, tanks out there.....so, I tend to use the term interchangeably.

The 1" thick acrylic, coupled with minimal heat imputs, has the chiller run, on average, about 20 minutes "ON".....and about 60 -90 minutes "OFF". It's the intense lighting that we all use that creates the need for mass chilling....take that away....and it's not that bad. I have gone through a summer....and everything seems to work OK.

This is still a work in progress....it will get better over time....as it is with most reefs. I'm just trying to experience the labor/reward ratio for running a temperate tank.

What kind of time frame is sustainable in those tanks? In other words, how big do you expect everything to get and at what rate? You mentioned that you're running one of these cold tanks in a 40 gallon. How long will you be able to keep things in that tank before they outgrow it? I'm assuming these anemones aren't going to turn into giants or split like crazy, but the box fish get pretty large, correct? Are they in your 120 and if so is that large enough for 3 box fish long term?

Wow, that's great. My parents lived in Port Townsend, Wa. for awile and we used to go over there and just be amazed at the variety of cold water corals. They grow like crazy even along the sides of piers where you can see slicks of fuel and garbage in the water. I thought they must be pretty hardy.

We saw massive amounts of the most colourful feather dusters, some of those would look boss.

Way to go!

:)

very cool fish and inverts ect...

Must be a pain to locate specimens of your choice. Its more like a sellers market...

That male white bar boxfish looks familiar. :)

Always wondered about the correlation and now I know, cool.

My fish are currently near....or at.....full grown. These boxes don't get that big.....and the blue devil is within an inch of being full grown. The small cold tank is for small inverts and colonial anemones (when I find some). Nothing in my tank currently gets too big.
