Cold!

Well I have never had to use a heater in my tank. but here in Arizona it has been getting below freezing at night and then the house heater died. It got to 65 in the house and when I checked my tank temp it was 70. It is normally around 78-80. Everything looks fine but my FHI Granulosa is starting to STN! I will need to frag a piece of it now! The reason I dont use a heater is mainly cause I dont trust them. I have 3 right now and none of them will turn off. Testing them set at 78 they will heat the water to 90+ and not turn off. I need to go a heater today ASAP and need to know a good one, AGA and Aquatic Gardens are what I have now. Please help.

I've had good luck with Ebo Jager heaters. Seems like every other brand I've tried has had a faulty thermostat. Some sooner than others, but the Jagers seem to be good.

Stay away from the JBJ true temp. My heater failed and now the temp probe has cracked. I've had this heater since July, 2010. For the price I paid and the term "professional" on the package, I am extremely dissapointed.

Warmest Regards,
James

although i very rarely use a heater myself, i've always used WON Brothers and never had a problem.
you have a few choices.
1. you can buy a large heater to get your temp up for today since you very rarely need a heater.
2. 2 or 3 very small heaters, this way if one heater sticks in the on position it still wont over heat the tank running by itself.
3. if you have lighting that normally heats your tank, you could shut the fans off so the light will raise the temp.

I will plug the heater on a timer for the time being. Have it turn on every couple of hours. This is better than letting the temp plunge while waiting to get a new heater.

I recommend getting a cheap aqua controller and using the controllers temp probe to run the heaters. This way it really doesn't matter what heater you use (so long as it isn't prone to exploding or anything).

I also use an Ebo Jager plugged into my chiller as a temp controller. I've never had any issues with the heater as long as it is controlled by the chiller

Get a Ranco temp controller. Relatively cheap and work very well. I doesn't make sense to make the weakest link in your system a super cheap thermostat, which will eventually fail.

A controller is by far the way to go...not to mention even if you invest in a basic RKL or something you will get all sorts of flexibility even beyond just controlling your heater. It will time your lights, dosing pumps, cut stuff on and off in emergencies etc etc. Its a great investment.

I use the via aqua titanium heater. they are not that expensive, you can get it from fosterandsmith. mine came with the used tank I bought, and works well. no risk of breaking glass and the temp setting is quite accurate. I mistakenly set the temp to 78, but my AC jr controller is programmed to turn off the heater at 79, so I was wondering why the temp stopped rising at around 78.1, then I saw the heater was set to 78. that's how I discovered the temp setting on the heater is quite accurate.

Wow thanks for all the replies. I wanted a Jager heater but Petsmart did not have them in the stores. I went with a Stealth heater and it as been working fine now for 24 hours. Temp is at 76-78 now. I did loose my ORA Bottle Brush sadly and my FHI Granulosa is not happy and is STNing a bit. I would like a controller but they are to expensive for me right now. I have been in this for 5 years and never had or needed a controller.
