Collecting snails

Went out to collect snails and I had an officer fron the Florida Department of Environmental Protection stop by for a chat. After he asked what I was doing I offered to show my fishing license. According to him if I'm a Fl resident and netting from shore (ie; wading into the water) a license isn't necessary.

fwiw and if you get arrested don't blame me ;) .

Any resident fishing in saltwater from land or from a structure fixed to the land does not need a license, you still need snook, lobster permit to keep those.

collection?

collection?

does anyone know the collection laws on scuba or if you are even aloud to collect and if you can what is legal to collect

Yes, you cannot collect live rock and hard corals and sea fans. I dive out here all the time and see lots of stuff, I could put in an aquarium. There are max limits of 20 animals(such as snails) max per person. This is a total fish, snails, crabs, etc 20 total. So if you find a colony of blue leg hermits on shore, 20 max, even though there are millions of them. Some things have limits as angels max 5, with min and max sizes. Zoas , gorgonian colonies have 6 colonies per person. I get astrea snails out here sometimes. They are on hard reefs, and wrecks, and artificial reefs. I have collected fish out here also. Blennies and gobies are no problem, but some fish-most fish, have air bladder called swim bladders. These will need to be decompressed. I do this by having a throw jug, so when I am collecting fish, and I find a reef with the fishfinder, I throw in the jug, which is weighted, and has enough line to reach that depth and just a little more, and has loops about 2" long set at 1/2 the depth and up at each 6' interval. When I catch a fish such as a jack knife fish or chromis, I put it is plastic wide mouth jug, and put it in a net bag with a clip(this hides it from mackeral which cruise the mid water), and hook it at 1/2 the water depth-50' depth, I put it at 25'-just like for way over deco time for human. For small fish such as these, I put it up 6' every 10 minutes or so. This is more accurate than on anchor line, but that will work too.

I was told that if you are in the water (wading) you do need a license. This comes from the Florida fishing report.

Agu where are you going for your snails? If you dont mind.:)

if your waiding you don't need a license but I'm uner the impression if you have to swin or use a boat get to the sand bar them you DO need a license to collext. diving from shore in water over your head I believe (*but not certain) would require a license.

Yes, thats how it works. Wading, fishing from shore or a pier, you dont need a license. Over your head or snorkeling you need a license. And even when you are wading you need to keep within the limits.

If you would like sometime I can do a talk with ALL the equipment needed to collect anything out here to collect. Nets of all kinds, jars, slurpguns, take-home containers, etc and diving/snorkeling equipment that can be used. And the care once you catch something. How to net fish(not as easy as I make it look!), how to remove zoas and gorgonians without breaking the law and not harming the animal. And on and on. We would host a meeting at our house but there is a layer of drywall dust on everything, we are tearing out the kitchen walls, and putting in a completly new kitchen, then having a GC put on an addition for a master suite. After that-maybe early 2009, we can host.

Sounds good Steve! Count me in too! We should go dive together sometime. I think I'd learn a lot from you!

I thought we would be diving this week, but the weather went bad! When it calms down, we'll get out. How is your aquarium doing?

Go to Blind Pass Park on Manasota Key, turn into the parking lot and go to the end of the road. There will be two entrances to the Bay, use the left one that takes you to the seagrass beds. You really want to go at low tide.

BTW, I bought a license just in case. Even if I don't need it it's a donation to a good cause, my peace of mind. ;)

I did to. But the wheather has other plans. We were out thursday with Jamie and it was suck! My aquarium is okay. I lost one of my banded coral shrimps. I don't really know what happened, but I guess the Angel ate him. In my nano I have some brittle worms I'm not sure what to do with them.
