Just wanted to get educated by the experts. I have a new clam when I bought it was hard to tell what its colors would be on it. I am no clam expert this is only my second try at this first was not good over a year ago. Well the clam came home and I was not happy with the colors it sucked light brownish purple with only some nice bright blue purple flanges :( put after a couple days the colors have changed to a much more intense color that I really like very little brown left. Could this change be from their thank to mine and the color change be from that i run a very low nutrient system ??I dose vsv, amino, alk, cal, mag, koral color, lugols iodine, 250mh 20kxm for light all parameters are fine. the clam is doing great now! just wanted to get thoughts about colors changing in clams and what causes this? thanks for reading and any info you share I will be on this forum from time to time now. I am hooked! :D

different lighting can make a huge difference in clams appearance. Also the angle at which your clam is at as well. I have a crocea clam that is brilliant green from the top angle but when you look at it from the front of the tank its a brilliant blue...what kind of clam did you get?

I got a a crocea. Yes I understand that angels change color and most clams seem to look better from viewing top down. but in this case the clam is in the same place but the color changed and not a little either but allot. I wish I had taken pictures, cause even my friend when he first seen the clam in my tank you could tell he thought it was not that nice. Now the brown has gone to a deep purple with bright blue & purple flanges and you cant believe its the same clam! And don't get me wrong it still don't compare to some of the clams I see on this forum but it went from being a $52 mistake that I thought I would trade in to a clam that is now a good start:) on my clam collection.

first off I must say I am as guilty as any one else hear! that is if I posted pictures or asked for pictures this thread would have got all kids of reply's :D all well I was hoping for some more thoughts on this but guess I will ask my questions on color in clams next time in the sps forum or get some pictures first to get the kids attention :p .........

That seems like a lot of light, course you may have a large tank. I have found the combo of bulbs makes a huge diff and that actinics seem to bring out more colors.

Is the clam on the bottom? What size tank?

I would bet you that the clam moved just a little and gave you a different perspective. For example. I have a small maxima. From the top down it is incredible and I have received lots of compliments on it. However, when you look at it from straight on it is brownish purple with very faint blue lines.

I repositioned the clam. Same result. However, the next morning it had shifted ever so slightly. Now you can see the actual color from any angle in the tank and from the top down. No difference. I just got lucky and it moved exactly the way it needed to be.

There are several threads in this forum dealing with this issue if you care curious give it a shot.

I would still like to see the new clam.

thanks for the reply's I guess I will figure it just moved. the tank i have it in is a 125gal and it is on the bottom. my tank is mostly sps just thought that the regular dosing might have made some change I guess I was wrong on this one thanks for the info..
