Colors after overnight shipment?

I wander how long it takes for SPS to be restored to the right colors after overnight shipment? I bought Acropora Millepora from Diver's Den and it arrived yesterday morning. Also the coral was not packed the right way and when I get it the water temperature was 51°F. I'm pretty new to SPS keeping. I'm sure there are many people buying SPS on line here. Any thoughts?

Yikes.. What color is it? If its white and have no tissue its probably dead. I would take a picture and contact them.

No, it's not white. It's extending polyps a little. I still keep it under lower light on the sandbed. It is supposed to be purple and it's more pinkish now.

It sounds like it bleached due to the low temps. I think you have the right idea leaving it in lower light and let it recover slowly.

Issues with DD packing? Never heard of that to be honest. Have you contacted them? They gaurantee live shipment.

Did you acclimate the coral?

They'll bleach out during overnight shipping sometimes brown up a bit depending on the temperature. It's always nice to get a warm shipment, but it's not always the case.
51F is really low, but it's possible for them to STN at those temperatures.

Ill throw in my feedback, I bought very nice milleporas from LA divers den twice in the last few months. Both were packed above and beyond what most I would consider "adequate". I'm talking giant boxes with tons of peanuts for a tiny coral. Both times, my milleporas were fully opened in 10 minutes, with no color issues.

I would definately call them, have them document your order with what happened, and wait out their 14 day arrive alive guarantee. This way if on day 14 or 15 you are not satisfied, you can ask them to review your notes and they will see you filed an issue the moment you got it, and can use that as leverage.

Now that I think of it, one of my millieporas came with a .5" branch tip that broke off. I filed a complaint, said I dont know if the health of the colony is affected, and I told them I wanted them to document this in case the colony goes south. They took my notes and said to call back in 2 weeks. I waited it out, the colony was fine, and the .5" tip I made into a frag that was (and still is) healthy. I called back on day 14 and told them all is well, and said I still was a little upset that a tip broke off because it was on the front of the colony and they gave me a partial credit as an apology, and told me they hope to do business with me again in the future. A++ service in my books. I told them the coral was doing fine and healthy and they still offered me the credit. Which I used a few weeks later on a different millepora that came perfect.

What are your tanks Alkalinity, Calcium, Magnesium, and Phosphate levels? Keeping these stable and correct is crucial for SPS keeping. Maybe you have a paramater off that we can help fix which will aid in the corals recovery?

My parameters are:
dkH 10
Ca 400
Mg 1350
No phosphate, no nitrate.
In the past I bought fish from Diver's Den twice and no issues. The box was huge with lots of styrofoam as usual, however the 2 heat packs were on the very top, right under the lid of the styrofoam box, then the styrofoam balls and the bag with the coral on the very bottom, so actually the heat packs didn't do what they were supposed to. The low temperature between WI and NY that night also didn't help.

++Update++
I moved the frag about 2" higher. It still extends the polyps and the coloration is slightly more vivid. I plan on moving it 2-3" higher after a few days.

nystang,
It was +- 12 degrees in Brooklyn yesterday
I never order and have delivered when the temps that low. You are lucky it was only 51 in box. It could have been much worse.

Yes. Lesson learned. Honestly, I was sure the heat packs will keep the temperature in a safe range during overnight shipment.

Polywise is absolutely correct. I am currently advising vendors to hold any of my pending shipments until temps become a little more reasonable around here. I'm actually surprised DD didn't opt to do that without even being asked!

I called them the next day after receiving the shipment. They noted my account. I asked about the way it was packed but I was told it's the standard way of packing corals. I mentioned the temperature we had and I'm sure Diver's Den facility in WI had similar weather on the day. Well what happened, happened. All I need now is make sure the coral recovers from this disaster.

So you guys think 12F is cold, eh? Must be nice to have such mild winters! Last week was cold, every day it was below -38C, with a low of -46C one day.

Shipments don't usually get delayed unless the weather's below -25C or so, that's around when the airlines/couriers refuse live shipments.

Have you ever ordered anything in this weather?

I've received many shipments from them. Some corals look good others don't but they always stand behind their corals. Never had a problem getting credit when something doesn't make it.

For sure - like I said, people don't stop ordering here until the airlines or couriers shut them down. We had a couple weeks of that -40 crap so the most recent group buy got delayed but we're in a warm spell now (-11C / 12 F now) so it'll be going out tomorrow for sure. If we didn't order because of this kind of weather, we'd have to wait until may to order!
