As promised, this is the thread to discuss the possibility of a large meeting hosted by COMAS.

AS I have said, there is nothing definite yet as there are a number of things that needs to be decided upon. This will be the place where I will try to keep you as informed as possible.

Ok...we decided at the end of last year to work on a lrger meeting that the other local clubs (OMAS and SOMAS) could participate in. We also wanted to use this as a vehicle to bring new faces into COMAS.

Both OMAS and SOMAS have said they will support as best they can. I will contact OKAA and see if they would like to join in with us. It will tho, be a meeting basically planned and organized by COMAS.

The idea is a locally based meeting that may become an annual event hosted in OKC somewhere. The theme we felt that was best was reeflife and fish conservation. Since we all strive to keep our livestock healthy and hopefully growing, that was felt a good concept.

The plan would be to have approx 4 speakers each giving around 45-50 min talks with questions and a demonstration. We had originally hoped that we may be able to encourage Anthony Calfo to come talk and give a dmeo, however he has comitments that make his attendance impossible. We have a few other ideas on guest speakers and are working on obtaining feedback from other clubs on who they felt gave good talks in this area.

If we can not get someone to discuss coral propagation I had volunteered to do so....but thats still up in the air.

The timeline is important. we were shooting for spring 2007. That gives us time to secure the venue and work on advertising and funding. I want this to be self funded as much as possible based on advanced ticket sales and advertising.

The size we envisage is approx 100 people.
we require an auditorium and an open space to talk, sit, drink sodas and meet people.

We also thought of minipresentation booths, for example, Travis and his man made rock. A simple demo, be it photos or mixes, the finished product, etc. This provides points of interest to people. Maybe a booth on how to drill a tank...all of these are as yet, just ideas. Something maybe on clownfish breeding?

We have played with names....

CARE 2007, Conservative Aquarist and Reef Enthusiast
ROK 2007 Reefkeeping Oklahoma
CORAL Central Oklahoma Reefkeepers And ??? (anyone have an L word)

and others. but you get the idea.

PaulT has been keeping tabs on the good the bad and the ugly names.

So thats the basic plan as it stands.

Now heres the first thing I want help with:

Please come up with a name for this first meeting. It has to reflect the meetings nature. It has to be simple, preferably an acronym, not used elsewhere ...

lets get some ideas on this and then with a name in mind, lets get going.

Paul.

"CORAL Central Oklahoma Reefkeepers And??? (anyone have an L word)"

LAWYERS? We have lawyers!
Central Oklahoma Reefkeepers Are Loveable?

CORAL 2007 Central Oklahoma Reefkeeping Aquarist League

League is defined as; an association or alliance for common action.

or

CRAP 2007 Conscientious Reefkeeping And Preservation :D

It's too late, time for bed........

CRAP 2007
Ray your to funny

with the other huge post with all the _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ in it !
your name would work lol

My favorite is currently:
ROK: Reefkeeping Oklahoma

Of course, with a carefully placed C.....
CROK: Conservationist Reefkeeping Oklahoma

Seriously, though, I REALLY like ROK. It could be logoed up as:

   R-OK
   R.OK
   R/OK

Or something similarly witty... It is nice and mutually inclusive of all oklahomans, etc.

well if ever your trying something new, its always good to talk with someone who has (or currently is) done it before.

I think that getting some ideas from this group woukd be very benifical. Check out their reef-a-palooza event. I think this could be a good event idea.

Also, somebody sticky this thread so it stays on the forefront.

One thing you have to think about when you compare a COMAS area meeting to one in Anaheim County is first; We have a population of under 2 million to draw from within a 100 mile radius. Anaheim has somewhere around a population of 15 million to draw from that is within a 100 mile radius. Plus Anaheim is pretty much the convention capital of the world and also draws from all over the entire world. Lastly Southern California has a population of people who have a lot more expendable cash than us.

Like Paul pretty much said. we have a little over 100 people who may come to something like this and that is a very optimistic figure.

ORCA -- Oklahoma Reefers Cooperative Association

Or maybe: ORKAFOSUSOF - Oklahoma ReefKeepers And Future Oklahoma SuperSonics Fans :) :) :)

I don't know that 100 people is an over exaggerated number in fact maybe under estimated. I don't know how many of you attended the Tulsa event where Eric Bornemann spoke but I would say from what I remember that there was over 100 people there. So I personally think if you advertise the event and get some good quality speakers you may even be able to draw people from Dallas and Wichita.
