Even if you use the more powerful 23 watt ones (100 watt incandescent replacements) you will need to have reflector's. Straight florescent like T-5 in reflectors have the advantage of not blocking their own light while the spiral bulb has the big dead spot in the middle so you will need to run more wattage for the same quantity of light. The color will be ugly in a reef tank as well, it is hard to find these in 6500K much less something more coral appropriate like 10000K.
So bottom line is that it is possible but will be less efficient and not look good in the tank. I would rather put together a DIY retrofit or a used t-5 off of craigslist before I did CFL. Some people do it in the fresh water planted world.
