Compainions for a 10 gallon

I have a 10 gallon and I am looking for another fish (if any).

I have kept many size nanos with different fish but I am curious as what you have tried.

The 10 gallon is split about 1/4 the way for a seperate are for a fuge and to stick my heater and pump.

Right now I have a Randall Goby and pistol with various snails and hermits.

Please tell me what you have in your or similar setup.

Ps- I know some sites have nano fish and lists of fish that would work, but I am curious to here YOUR experiences.

If oyu are going to put any more rock in there, a royal Gramma would do weel ( mine tends to hide in rocks more than its out). Standard clowns would work, but those black ones at Phishybusiness would work, too, and they are sweeter.

it probably depends more on if you want a swimmer type fish, or one that kinda hops around.

How is the goby/shrimp pair doing? Get us some pics of them!!!!

Hey Cj!

The pair is doing fine. I moved out some rock yesterday three different times (oops!) and I guess I freaked the goby out a little bit because he won't go back into the rocks! I will give him till this weekend to see where he goes, then I am forcing him in!

I like the idea of a royal gramma, but I know that they can get fairly large (3 inches or so) and I am not too sure if that would do well with about 8 gallons of swimming room.

It is hard to find a fish that is an open swimmer in such a small tank. Clowns get boring, and if I got one, I would want 2... which IMO is too much for such a small tank.

Do you two gobies would do well in this setup? I don't know if a different speices would fight, or even if I got another Randalls.

You could definantly have soem sort of clown goby...they do tend to swim a bit more, and perch on the rocks. Bicolor psuedochromis might work?????

BTW....what was the kind of goby you said only got to 2 inches, and was apired with a shrimp??

I could do a clown goby I guess.

The goby I was talking about was a Wheelers Watchman goby. Some sites say they will grow to 2-3 inches, but I have never seen one over 2. Also, the Hi Fin Red Banded goby rarely exceeds 2-3 inches.

alright...thanks. I am htinking tha tI might set up a 2.5 or 5 with a goby pair and zoos/ ricordias.

It look slike jsut about any small goby. The court Jester goby is more of a swimmer in my experience. Those CLingfish also look interesting.

six line wrasse also do well in smaller tanks. chalk bass, chromis???

Ever thought of doing like a showpeice invert like a linkia star?

Sounds like a nice idea on your setup.

I am thinking I will just go with some sort of clown goby. I wonder if another shrimp goby would get along with the one I have now, or if they would fight.

As far as sand sifters go, I don't thin kI will try my luck on them. I had a court jester in my 55 and he still didn't have enough sand to sift with a 4 inches DSB.

I have been trying to think of good inverts to get but haven't gotten very far. Most stars need excellent water quality and would quickly outgrow a 10 gallon.

Also, I have to keep in mind that whatever fish/invert I get, it has to be local. And I know a lot of the LFS have hard times getting in odd ball small fish. So I think I will check out Jacks and maybe email Phishy on small gobies.

Hey friend!
Rip out that mexicana caulerpa ... it's hell to get rid of once it roots into all your LR and you'll spend more time trimming it in a few weeks and it will turn into a pesky situation! Make sure you take the roots off as well! Also please do not flush it if you live near an ocean or lake. Everything else looks grand!

Actually I enjoy the caulerpa sert. I do not plan on having corals so any odd ball macros I come across, I plan to keep.

You could try to pair up another Randalls with the one you have now.......not sure how successful it owuld be, but form what i have read, they do spawn in captivity

i have to disagree...

sixlines are *ok* in 25-30, but really, they need larger... they graze on LR all day in an 8 gallon it would likely kill both the goby (territory) and shrimp (food) eventually. they can be very aggressive when they don't have enough room, and they can get big (4"). i've had one and it was a nightmare from day 1.

also, IMO there's no way 8 gallon could support a linckia. recommended for the small ones is like 50. the blue ones need 100g total volume at least, and they can grow to be over a foot. i know the smaller orangey/red ones can be sustained in smaller tanks, but again, 8 is waaay too little.

i'd avoid a bottom dwelling goby, as it will likely fight with the randalls. pseudos might go after the shrimp in that size tank... i'd do a blue reef chromis perhaps, or a firefish, if you can make an eggcrate lid of some type. i like the tank.
