Compatibility with clowns

I'm new to this hobby and have a 25 gallon saltwater with 2 clowns, sand-sifting star, cleaner shrimp and some snails. I also have xenia and an orange sun polyp.

I promised my wife a "blue" fish, and we had a regal tang which contracted ick while we were away and died. I've since read that tangs are extremely susceptible to ick, and have kind of steered myself away from them, while still promising a "blue fish."

Would a pygmy angel be compatible with my 2 clowns? Or if we go ahead and try another regal tang (baby), are there any ways to prevent ick?

25gal is way too small for even a baby tang. Blue damsel, blue accessor or cherub will be fine.

Your tang probably got ick from the stress of being in such a small tank. That is too small even for a baby. Also for any angel. A blue damsel would work, but they are also very agressive. What about 1 chromis?

What species of clown have you got? In a 25g a pair of maroons, saddlebacks or other agressive clowns might not tolerate ANY other fish. If they're ocellaris (nemo) or percs, skunks, or another more peaceful, smaller clown I agree with Amy - go for a blue damsel. They can hold their own with other territorial fish and won't mind the small tank size. A cherub angel might not do as well - they're tiny but like room to run.

the damsels wont get along with your clowns, possibly a cherub angel, but they can be aggresive and may not tolerate the clown either. it is kind o hit and miss with them.

1. They're ocellaris clowns.

2. As for the damsel, I had a damsel in it when I added the clowns and he attacked them. I took it back.

Is a chromis blue? I thought they were somewhat greenish.

There are both Blue Reef Chromis and Blue/Green Chromis. The Blue/Green's will sort of change colors depending on how the light hits them. The Blue Reef Chromis, which are a much darker blue color, are what you would probably want.

Look at a blue assessor. They're small and peaceful and have a nice deep blue color.

I'd bet you could get away with adding the damsel to the clowns, rather than the other way around. The yellow "bellied" blue are incredibly colorful and supposed to be much more peaceful than the yellow "tailed". Good luck.

If you make sure and get a yellow-belly from the genus Pomacentrus, you might be alright --- oooor just tell her that in order to have the blue fish she wants you'll have to buy a bigger tank

A yellow bellied damsel should be alright, or better yet a Alleni damsel (Pomacentrus alleni).

Also consider;

Blue assesor (Assessor macneilli) (as mentioned, really peaceful and a lovley blue colour).

bluestreak cardinal (Apogon leptacanthus) (not totally blue but a nice incandescent blue colouring around the gills).

Blue reef chromis (Chromis cyaneus) (as mentioned, quite a nice deep blue and very peaceful).

blue neon gobies (Elacatinus oceanops) (great little fish, one of my favourites. Not all blue but a strong bright flash. And very small, maybe add a pair).
